Freeport, Tx fishing?
I’m going fishing to Freeport on Saturday. I would like to know where in Freeport is a good spot for fishing. Also what kind of bait works best I usually buy shrimp and mullet.
There are lots of good fishing holes around the Freeport/Brazoria county area. I fished that area hard for over 30 yrs. For easy fishing there are two sets of jetties to choose from, one located on the Surfside side of the Brazos and the Quintana jetties on the South side of the river. You can catch some nice fish but I tend to stay away from the jetties because of hangups. I use to wade fish nearby the jetties fishing in-between the second and third sandbars out in the surf. Caught tons of flounders, reds, and specks out of those areas. Use a popping cork with a live shrimp for best results. During low tide you can make it out to the third sandbar and throw out some cut mullet. Caught lots of bull reds and black tip shark and lots of other species. Watch the undertows if fishing near the third bar, very dangerous sometimes. During low tide you could drive down Bryan Beach to the mouth of the San Bernard river. About 1/4 mile from the mouth of the river is a place called the blue hole. During August when the surf lays down you can see the blue hole from the shoreline. A deep shade of blue about the size of a football field. You can wade to the third sandbar with surf rods and cast out into the middle of it. I brought in a 352lb tiger shark out of there about 25yrs ago. Lot’s of big sharks in that area I’ve been rubbed a few times, the mouth of the river is a big feeding ground. Fish near the banks of the river for good flounders . The river banks are steep when you move up into the river away from the mouth. Use a popping cork with a mudminnow or shrimp just off of the bank, guarantee flounder this time of year. Fish on the bottom for reds and everything else there as well. Use enough weight to keep your bait still if fishing the bottom. Fish the bottom with shrimp or mullet there. Caught lots of gafftop there as well. If going to the mouth you must get out there on low tide and leave on low tide. You will have a good chance of getting stuck if you try to get out of there during high tide. There are 4 tides so you can figure on being out there for 12 hrs or camping out. I use to camp out there every chance I use to get. If camping or during the late evening, bug spray is a must. Those salt grass mosqitoes will carry you away out there if unprepared. Beware of undetows out near the mouth area for sure. Then there is wade fishing Christmas Bay near the Key Largo area, thats about 8-10 miles past Surfside going towards Galveston. Popping cork with live shrimp or mudminnows in this area. Right across the street from the Bay is the beach and just offshore is some really old shell reefs with tons of baby clams around. Great wade fishing around there as well. I actually just got back from visiting my old stomping grounds there over the 4th of July Fishing Fiesta tournament. I didnt place on the winners board but I ended up with about 200lbs of nice fish that I brought back up to BC with me. Feel free to email me for more info if needed. 40yr exp Pacific Nortwest guide
