I want to carve my initials into something?

My dad gave me a new handmade old fashioned hand line jigging stick for ice fishing the other day, it’s something i hope to keep for the rest of my life seeing as how my dad made it just for me, so i want to carve my name or initials into it without wrecking it, how would i do this?? i have some wood carving tools if that helps in your suggestions

Why not ask your Dad to carve your initials in it.
This would make it’s significance to you even more meaningful.
