It is useful to have a few simple tools are available in your tackle or bait box. A small metal file or sharpening stone and a rod should do the trick. If you work with very small hooks, you can find a fly tying vice to be helpful, so good. There are also several battery-powered hook sharpeners available, which can be used for quick touch ups – but if you plan to use one of these, so make sure you also have in stock extra batteries.
When you sharpen your hook, it is best to remember that a pyramid or triangle tips will be most effective for piercing and swallow a fish. Begin by sending back (or outside edge) of the point surface. Then place the tip of your file at a 45 degree angle to your previous position and file half of the inside of the hook at this angle. So file the second half of the interior along an opposite angle to form a triangle-shaped section.
If you want to test your hook for sharpness, drag it lightly over the tip of a finger nail. A hull glides easily without catching is not quite sharp enough. If it creates a scratch of a fingernail with very little pressure or catches light, then you have successfully increased your hook.
