Fishing in the Florida Panhandle – Offshore or Inshore fishing, its all Good

Florida Panhandle offers some of the best fishing opportunities on the Gulf Coast. Species ranges from small trout to huge Blue Marlin over a thousand pounds.

One of the contributing factors to the great fishing is the lack of development in the Panhandle. Clean water and lack of of polluted run from a small population includes estuaries and back waters suitable for fish roe and bait fish reproduction.

Another factor is the relatively close access to deep water compared to other areas on the Gulf Coast. The De Soto Canyon is a sharp decrease in deep water, famous for nearly world record Blue Marlin. The De Soto Canyon is only 95 miles from Destin Pass, 85 miles from Fort Walton Beach and 80 miles from Pensacola.

Other popular offshore species include Dolphin, Mahi Mahi is also called, Wahoo, Sailfish and Red Snapper. Most of these can be caught within 30 miles of the coast, especially in the heat summer months.

Closer to land, the anglers find kingfish, Cobia, grouper and an occasional Tarpon. Spring fishing for Cobia, also known as ling by the locals, are among the best in the country. Anglers fishing near the coast, usually after bait pods of pilchards and threadfin herring. Both towers are used to spotting Cobia and rays, which sometimes has Cobia following rays kick up crabs and other tasty morsels on Cobia feed on. When a beam is spotted fishermen will sight-cast to the fish often with a live sardine or a squid-tipped jig on their line.

But you do not need a boat, pier fishing from Cobia often produces results. Pier anglers will stand at the pier rails with rod in hand waiting for a Cobia to swim at the time threw for Cobia with a squid-tipped jig.

Pier fishing is very popular in the Florida Panhandle. The Pier at Pensacola Beach is a favorite, with plenty of parking and a place to eat. Fort Walton Beach Pier is not only great for fishing, but a neighbor of good food and entertainment. As the sun goes down There are many places to experience the Panhandle nightlife too.

Pier fishermen generally target Pompano, Spanish mackerel, Bluefish, flounder, sheep head, Black Drum, and Croakers. Most of the Panhandle beach jetties have bait shops, complete with rods and reels to buy or rent. Many are also willing to give their expert advice, as rigs to use and what baits have worked the best recently.

Fishing inside the bays and sounds on the Panhandle is also very productive. The usual catch includes trout, Redfish, Black Drum, and Founder. The Choctawhatchee Bay near Destin sound is a favorite spot as St. Andrews Bay near Panama City Beach. Small apartments are both popular in these areas. Fishermen use both artificial and natural bait.

Charterhouse both inshore fishing, offshore and bay fishing is available throughout Florida's Panhandle and your do not need a license. Florida residents do not need a fishing license if fishing from land or a solid structure such as a bridge or pier. Non-residents need a fishing license to fish anywhere other than a licensed charter boat with a vessel license.
