York Region

York Region has a population of over 870,000 people and covers an area of over 1,750 square kilometers. The meeting between Peel Region in Western and Durham Region to the east, York Region consists of the towns of Markham and Vaughan, with the townships of Aurora. East Gwillimbury, King, Newmarket, Richmond Hill and Whitchurch-Stouffville

The two main population centers are Cities of Markham and Vaughan. Both cities have average population of Markham is the largest in the region with more than 220,000. Markham is known to be the Hi Tech capital of Canada with several high profile corporate head offices making the city their home. The city is modern with excellent healthcare and schooling. Vaughan has a specific claim to fame in being directly north of Toronto, which makes them "over" the main city. Also it is a fast growing city with good facilities and plenty of new communities shoot up.

The York Region is host to over 25,000 businesses providing 400,000 jobs – a figure that grows by about 20,000 per year at current prices. With close to Pearson International Airport and a young, educated workforce, York Region is one of the fastest growing regions in the GTA and is very popular with immigrants. The York Region Transit system connects most communities within the region together and Toronto GO Transit system to provide a highly efficient public transportation.

Region administers health care and training for Provincial guidelines. The York Region District School Board and York Region Catholic District School Board is responsible for the daily operation of the region's schools – all of which can be contacted via these sites.

The city of Aurora – With a population of just 43,000, the city of Aurora is another rapidly expanding town. The population is young and has a high average income (compared to most Canadian cities) of approximately $ 110,000 per household. The house is pretty expensive though with an average price of a single family detached home is over $ 370,000 two years ago!

There is a wide range of employers in the city and is also commutable to Toronto downtown core. This provides a low unemployment rate of 4% in 2001 with the bulk of employment in management / business, economics and science / technology. Manufacturing and retail are the other major areas of employment. The town itself is a historical place with lots of old buildings with lots of character. With close to both the great city of Toronto and rural Aurora provides excellent recreational opportunities to its citizens. This varies from parks, playgrounds and pedestrian trails to championship golf courses, fine dining and theater. A full recreational program offered in town that will soon be expanded with a new state of the art Leisure Centre.

The city of East Gwillimbury is a semi-rural area just a half hour drive from Toronto. Another historic area with settlement dating back 1700s, the population is now over 20,000 and growing.

Again, East Gwillimbury has a range of excellent recreational facilities including arena's, trails, play parks and over 135 acres of park. There are skating rinks, outdoor sports grounds, the usual golf courses and the less active a 16 screen cinema.

There is a wide range of employers in the city offers ample employment and the new GO Transit station gives good access to town. The population also enjoys an above average household income.

The city of Georgina is the northernmost area of York Region and consists of several smaller communities. Located on the southeastern coast of Lake Simcoe, communities of Georgina have plenty of beaches and open spaces – particularly in the area known as "Getaway Country".

Lake offers year round recreation, including swimming, sailing, canoeing, fishing and ice fishing to name a few. On top of this great outdoors all around, and the communities have good facilities. Some of the more prominent community Keswick, Sutton, Udora, Jacksons Point and Port strength.

Most jobs seem to be in the local services and tourism sector though full research can performed by Commerce website.

The Township Of King is home to around 20,000 people and is a pretty rural area. Famous for the Holland Marsh – a fertile area that produces most of the provinces of fresh vegetables – most industry is based on the support of agriculture. There are a lot of horse breeders in the area along with livestock and livestock. There is some light industry and the Seneca College campus is located at the former Easton estate.

As with most Canadian cities, the King good sport and leisure facilities including golf courses, trails, parks and 3 arena's. Most facilities are pay as you use – more details can be found on the township website. The Township has a rich history dating back to the indigenous peoples and then the western settlers in the late 1600s. A museum is now dedicated to the area's history and will be worth a visit.

There are good transport links to Toronto and it is only about 40 minutes to drive to Pearson International Airport (south). A prosperous city the average income back in 1996 was over 97,000 with an unemployment rate at 5%. In the eight years since I can only see that the average income would rise to over $ 100,000 per household.

The Town Of Newmarket is another great city with a population of over 73,000 that are growing relatively rapidly. Over 70% of the population is under 45 years old. With all the amenities you would expect of a big town, Newmarket is home for York Region Administrative Headquarters, Provincial Court and District 1 Police HQ.

The Southlake regional health center is a fully equipped modern hospital with plans for expansion. These combine to make local government the highest employer in the area. Added to this, is the local business growing by over 3.5% each year retail and manufacturing companies that have a large presence. For recreation purposes there is a full program of sports and activities with the new Ray Twinney Rec. center with two arena's and an indoor pool. There are several other arena's, pools and skating rinks in the city and a youth center with a fully equipped skatepark. All the usual outdoor activities in the area, including hiking, skiing and golf. For the less energetic, Upper Canada Mall is an impressive one million square feet of shops, which should reassure even the most hardy shopper!

House prices are fair to Ontario with the average in 2001 being $ 242,000 for a single family detached homes. Being located near Toronto brings obvious benefits with great transport links including the GTA GO Transit system. The York Region Transit system also operates in the town. Highway 404 will lead you to the center of Toronto in about 30 minutes and Pearson International Airport is located only one hour away. Button Ville airport in nearby Markham is useful for lighter regional aircraft.

The city of Richmond Hill is one of the fastest growing large municipalities in Canada and has a population of over 158,000. Located directly north of Toronto, (Between Markham and Vaughan), Richmond Hill is ideally located for commuting and access to the city for recreation or onward journey. As with the other municipalities have Richmond Hill York Transit, Toronto Transit Commission and GO Transit GTA Network offers great opportunities for transportation.
