Situated on the northern bank of the Thames estuary and a tourist destination since Georgian times, partly because of its proximity to the capital, London, Southend on Sea remains a popular resort on this day.
The Pier at Southend is the longest Pleasure Pier in the world and because of various upgrades since the closure and meter is now 2,158 meters (1,341 miles) long and is a Grade II listed building. The Pier was designed by engineer James Brunlees and the work was completed in 1889.
The modern Pier is largely redeveloped and has a new RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) lifeboat station, museum and gift shop and also has two new Pier locomotives named after the English poet and author Sir John Betjeman and Sir William Heygate, the Lord Mayor of London from 1822 to 1823 and famous residents of Southend.
Southend on Sea can be reached London easily by either two main A route roads, the A127 or A13 runs from the capital, both via the M25 and is about 40 miles east of town. Southend Victoria Train Station is serviced of trains running from London Liverpool Street and should take just under an hour, so it's worth leaving the car at home and easy to see why it has become Londoners favorite seaside resort.
The city's seafront is known for its many attractions, not least, Adventure Island amusement park, located directly on the seafront. Straddled entrance to the Pier, the park contains over 40 rides including four roller coasters and two water rides.
Access to the park is free, but if you want to ride you would have to buy one of the different wrist bands available, which entitles the bearer to different levels of rides depending paid and coarse, age and height provisions.
Also located along the seafront is Sea-Life Adventure, an aquarium, which is both an entertaining and educational place to visit. With a walk through the water tunnel, you have a fantastic view of sharks and fish, as you know the kids will just love. If shopping is more your scene, you will find Southend on Sea has a variety of shops to rival most cities. Within a stone's throw from the seafront you will find the Royals Shopping Centre, with shops, eating and drinking and events that place whole year, you pay it a visit.
With plenty to entertain children and adults, overlooking the Thames estuary, to miles of promenade walk and enough shops to satisfy even the most ardent shopper, why not visit Southend and make up your own mind. I am sure you will return.
