Geelong – Victoria – Australia
Geelong is the second largest city in Victoria and is located just 75 km's southwest of the states capital, Melbourne. It is located on Corio Bay and has a population of more than 160,000 people.
The first non-natives to be found the area that would later become Geelong was believed to have been Lieutenant John Murray, who 'discovered' the area in 1802, while commanding the Lady Nelson. While not can get into Corio Bay because of a sandbank Nelson moored Lady Nelson and sent some of his crew ashore to explore what the region offered. But it was until 1836 that the three European settlers, David Fisher, James Strachan and George Russell arrived to settle the area was subsequently named 'Geelong' in 1837. A name derived from the original name for the area, "Jillong '.
It should be noted that in 1803 a prisoner named William Buckley escaped from prison and lived among the Wautharong indigenous peoples in the Geelong area until 1835, when he surrendered to authorities arriving to study Geelong. Buckley was eventually pardoned and worked as an interpreter.
During the gold rush in 1850's Geelong grew rapidly as it was the most direct route from the port to the gold fields of Ballarat. A number of significant buildings, including the Geelong Hospital and Town Hall is a legacy from this period and has amogst urban heritage.
As the gold fields dried up Geelong's growth slowed, but the city was well established and although it soon became overgrown Melbourne, Geelong grew in Victoria's second largest city. In 1902 Geelong began developing a series of infrastructural industries, including its own power plant and waterworks. Shortly after Ford Motor Company established a production facility in 1920 as did Shell Refinery around 16 years later in 1936.
Geelong has continued its growth into a modern and vibrant city and is the 12th largest in Australia.
Geelong's coastal location on Corio Bay offers many water-based attractions such as impressive foreshore pool, walking and beaches. There are also plenty of fishing, swimming and boating opportunities.
In Geelong there are highlights, which includes the Ford Discovery Centre, National Wool Museum, Old Geelong Gaol and Maritime Museum. There are also a number of historic buildings and places of interest which can be found in our own guided or guided tour. There are also plenty of fine restaurants, shops, carousel which dates back to 1887, hiking, waterfalls and more, Cunningham Pier, Botanic Garden, Waterfront all waiting to be discovered.
All year Geelong hosts several annual festivals, including festivals, a Celtic Festival, Geelong Cup, Cycling Events and Air Shows. Geelong is also the gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula and Great Ocean Road which include such iconic Australian attractions such as the Twelve Apostles, Bells Beach and Whale Watching
Around the Greater Geelong area, you will also find a number of convenient day trips to such places as the stunning geological formations You Yang granite peaks, Werribee Zoo, Brisbane Ranges and Anakie Gorge.
For wine lovers, and "Foodies" the Geelong region produces some of the finest varieties and wine in Australia. Throughout Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula you'll find a number of cellar doors and restaurants compliment.
For those who want to enjoy more vigorous activities during of their visit to Geelong region there are some great bike tracks, surf beaches and surfing lessons, airplane and helicopter tours, boat charter, diving tours and theme parks
Geelong is also home to the Geelong Football Club ("The Cats"), which in 2007 excited the local community by winning the AFL (Australian Rules Football) Premier League. Club play many games on its home ground at Kardinia Park in Geelong and is open to the public and members.
